This hanging cake table looks magical when suspended from the ceiling. Great alternative to a regular cake on a cake stand!

It's not too hard to make, and you can decorate it with whatever colours and accessories match in with your theme.

What you'll need

  • Plywood (12mm thick)
  • Fabric
  • Wire rope / Cable (2-3mm thick)
  • 10 x Cable U-bolts (Same gauge as the cable)
  • 9 eyelet rings (optional)
  • Drill
  • Jigsaw
  • Staple Gun
  • Glue Gun

First of all - you'll need to draw out three circles on your plywood. The easiest way I found was to put a nail in the ply where the center will be, tie string around a pencil and then to the nail and draw keeping tension on the string, this way you get a perfect circle.

The diameter (full width) of my circles were 60cm, 50cm and 40cm. So for each circle, the string would be half that size.

Once your circles are drawn out, use the jigsaw to cut out each one.

On each circle, you'll need to mark out and drill three holes for the cable to go through. Each hole should be 1.5cm from the edge of the wood, and equal distance apart. You'll want to make the hole around the size of the eyelets you have as they'll be sitting inside them. Around 8mm should be fine.

Once your holes are drilled, lay the piece of plywood over your fabric and cut roughly 10cm larger. Make sure your fabric isn't stretching or pulling in any way before cutting.

Using a staple gun, pull the fabric around and staple the 'top'. You'll need to do the 'bottom' side next, pulling tight as you go. Then switch and do the 'left' and 'right'.

From here on in - put a staple evenly in between two existing staples, and always do the two opposite sides one after another so it remains even.

Keep doing this until you have staples almost touching. Trim off excess fabric if you have any.

Cut a circle in fabric a bit smaller than your plywood, but make sure it is big enough to cover the staples. Use a hot glue gun doing small patches at a time to glue this down.

Once you have your three circles covered, find the holes you drilled previously and cut a small slit in the fabric. Poke an eyelet through the top of each hole to finish it off neatly.

Cut the wire cable into three lengths of 160cm. Start by attaching a U-bolt to the end of each piece.

Thread each wire through the bottom (biggest) piece of plywood, poking the wire upwards. This will leave the wood sitting on the U-bolts, stopping the cable coming through.

Measure up each cable 27cm and add another U-Bolt to each. Thread this through the middle layer.

Repeat this step, measuring up 27cm and adding another U-Bolt and thread this one through the top layer.

Gather all three cables together, thread them through the last U-Bolt. Make a loop and thread the loose ends back through the same U-Bolt then tighten.

You may need to make adjustments to make each layer level. Hang it from something and see if a small ball rolls off. You can loosen the U-Bolts where necessary to move them up or down to fix the level.

Decorate with flowers, extra fabric, or just leave it plain! Oh and don't forget the cakes!
